About Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art Workshops

Edinburgh Atelier of Fine Art workshops are one or two week long courses on subjects including making master copies in oil learning the process and materials of previous masters, or drawing or painting portraits from a live model. Workshops are a great way for people who are unable to commit to full or part-time study, to learn atelier techniques and greatly boost their skills.

(Scroll down to see our list of scheduled workshops).

Workshops run several times per year within our studios in Edinburgh, although we sometimes travel for workshops further afield. If you or your art club would be interested in an Edinburgh Academy of Art workshop in your area, please contact us.

What You Will Achieve in a Week

It may be unlikely that you will finish your workshop drawing or painting in such a small space of time but what you will achieve is a concentrated and thorough knowledge of a process that you can then choose to incorporate into your own art works and at your own pace. A workshop for a week will improve your drawing and painting for life. Many participants claim to have learned more from a week long workshop than they did in 3 years of art college.

Workshop Instructors

Group sizes are kept quite small, so each participant gets lots of one-on-one attention from our superb instructors. EAFA instructors teach year round so, unlike many artists who offer summer/holiday workshops, our instructors are professional teachers as well as successful award-winning artists. Whether you are an award winning experienced artist or have never painted before, our instructors will tailor to your skill level.

Occasionally we also invite prestigious guest artists and instructors to run workshops.

Workshop hours

Most workshops are scheduled five days per week, Monday to Friday, with weekends free (unless otherwise noted). The hours are usually 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but will occasionally go to 5:00 p.m.

Figure Drawing on Toned Paper

aristides figure drawing10.00am – 16:00pm

Location: Academy of Realist Art
St. Margaret’s House
151 London Road

Instructor: Juliette Aristides
Price: £400

Explore the atmospheric use of tone in this three-day figure-drawing immersion. You create two kinds of work: a reductive drawing where you apply the charcoal first and remove the tone to reveal a strong value pattern. Next you draw on toned paper with white, where the charcoal or pencil is built up gradually to create form. Strong management of values in a composition is responsible for much of the power and visual impact of a work of art. Using the figure model as your subject, you look at many different aspects of tone such as composition, shape, edges and contrast.
